I came across the youtube clip above, when researching the Nyarugusu refugee camp. I was immediately touched when watching this clip and couldn't help but compare the conditions Ebalo lives in, with the privileged conditions many of the Sydney children live in. Ebalo is used to living in these conditions, this is his normal. I wonder what it would be like to trade places with Ebalo for 1 day.
How would I feel living in a home made from tarps and wood?
What I be able to survive off minimal amounts of food?
Would I enjoy learning in the different classroom environment?
Would I get along with all the children?
Would I feel safe?
On the other hand, how might Ebalo feel living like a typical child in Sydney for 1 day?
Would he feel comfortable in our different classroom environments?
Would he enjoy eating different foods?
Would he feel safe in our large homes?
Would he be able to learn the same content, students his age are learning?
When reflecting on these questions I picture very different scenarios, I picture a lost Ebalo in the Sydney lifestyle. In the youtube clip Ebalo is comfortable with his current lifestyle, he enjoys going to school and learning despite the conditions surrounding him. This proves that we should always appreciate the little things in life.
